Grace Paley, a wonderful poet, author, and political activists passed away this month. She was 84. She wrote spare and poignant poems and short stories. Please look into her work and, if you can find it, listen to her. She had a great Brooklyn accent so it brings a whole new dimension to her work. Below is a poem she wrote and you can also read more about her here. Pass it on.

Here by Grace Paley

Here I am in the garden laughing

an old woman with heavy breasts

and a nicely mapped face.

how did this happen

well that’s who I wanted to be

at last a woman

in the old style sitting

stout thighs apart under

a big skirt grandchild sliding

on off my lap a pleasant

summer perspiration

that’s my old man across the yard

he’s talking to the meter reader

he’s telling him the world’s sad story

how electricity is oil or uranium

and so forth I tell my grandson

run over to your grandpa ask him

to sit beside me for a minute I

am suddenly exhausted by my desire

to kiss his sweet explaining lips.

YomynameisAnnie.

I currently work at the Newberry Library downtown as a library assistant. The Newberry is a special library meant for research purposes but is open to the public.

I am going to library school with the intention of getting a job at a public library because I want to present the gift of knowledge to the world.  I’m hoping to be involved in literacy programs, reader’s advisory, and outreach when I become a librarian.  I am also a writer and just finished a young adult novel which has prompted me to look into to youth librarianship.

I am in this class because I think that the idea of opening up the library to the users is a better way to get more people to use libraries…go figure.  I would love to work at a library where each group of patrons (children, nannies, parents, seniors, homeless, etc.) feels like, “This is MY library.”  That would be nice.

Also, I am thinking about doing my paper on Library 2.0 for Senior Citizens. Ruth said an interesting comment the first class that a lot of senior are starting bowling leagues with the Nintendo Wii because they don’t have to lift the ball which is great. If anyone else knows of any Elderly2.0 factoids, feel free to let me know.
